Violaine Havelange - de Duve Institute, UCL: Roles of microRNAs in the pathogenesis of myeloproliferative malignancies with tyrosine

2014 & 2016 - MicroRNAs are small RNAs that do not code for protein. They regulate the expression of multiple target genes. MicroRNAs have been involved in many cancers and in particular in acute myeloid leukemia. Receptor tyrosine kinases are a family of molecules located at cell surface that are able to transmit extracellular signals to the inside of the cell. They control fundamental cellular events such as proliferation, maturation and cell death. Receptor tyrosine kinases are commonly altered in some types of hematological malignancies and constitute an attractive therapeutic target with the development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The aim of our project is to explore microRNAs deregulated by receptor tyrosine kinase alterations or controlling receptor tyrosine kinases in different hematological malignancies and to determine their roles in proliferation, maturation and cell death. In a second time, we will measure the expression of selected microRNAs in patient blood samples before and after tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment in order to use microRNAs as prognostic or therapeutic tools in these patients.
